Founded in 1985, the Nightingale Awards event honors nurses who embody the philosophy and practice of Florence Nightingale, a 19th century nursing pioneer, who epitomized the art of helping people toward their optimal health. Each year between 200 and 300 nurses are nominated from across Colorado, with only 15 selected as finalists. From among those 15, six are selected as recipients. Centura Health and our affiliate hospital nurses are consistently among the nominees, finalists and award recipients. Eight nurses from across the Centura Health network were honored as 2014 Nightingale Luminaries by the Colorado Nurses Foundation for their excellence in leadership, advocacy and innovation in the nursing profession. One of our eight honored Luminaries, Kathy Mayer, MS, RN, CMTE, program director, Flight For Life® Colorado, St. Anthony Hospital, received the coveted 2014 Nightingale Award. In addition to Kathy’s recognition, our 2014 Luminaries include:
"We are looking for nurses who have made a difference in their
workplace and to their patients. We are looking for bedside experience. We are
looking for involvement in the nursing community, professional organizations
and in their community at large. Nightingale Award recipients have a healthy
sense of self care and value their relationships with family and friends. When
I review the group of nurses being considered for finalist status, I'm often
left wondering 'When do these people sleep?'" -Linda Schuyler, Nightingale Event Coordinator, Colorado Nurses Foundation
