Avista Adventist Hospital Earns Three Top Honors from The Joint Commission and an “A” Rating from The Leapfrog Group
11/05/2013

Louisville, October 30, 2013 - Avista Adventist Hospital has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval® for its New Life Center, Normal Delivery Disease Specific Certification by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission's national standards for health care quality and safety in normal delivery care. The certification award recognizes Avista Adventist Hospital's dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission's state-of-the- art standards.

Avista was also named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission. Avista Adventist Hospital was recognized by The Joint Commission for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions. The clinical processes focus on care for heart attack, pneumonia, surgery, children's asthma, stroke and venous thromboembolism, as well as inpatient psychiatric services. Avista Adventist Hospital was recognized for its achievement on the pneumonia and surgical care.

Additionally, Avista received an "A" for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group

The Leapfrog Group, the leading patient safety group in the country, sponsored by most of the Fortune 500 companies, rated Avista Adventist Hospital as an "A" hospital in patient safety. Hospitals are evaluated on national standards of safety, quality and efficiency and given an A, B, C, D or F grade as a result.

About The Joint Commission's Disease-Specific Care Certification

The Joint Commission is the leading accrediting body of health care organizations in America. Avista underwent a rigorous on-site review in mid-October, 2013. A Joint Commission expert evaluated Avista's New Life Center for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.

"In achieving Joint Commission certification, Avista Adventist Hospital has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients with Normal Delivery," says Jean Range, M.S., R.N., C.P.H.Q. executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, The Joint Commission. "Certification is a voluntary process and I commend Avista Adventist Hospital for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves."

The Joint Commission's Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

Top Performer on Key Quality Measures Award

Avista Adventist Hospital is one of 1,099 hospitals in the U.S. earning the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. The list of Top Performer organizations increased by 77 percent from last year and it represents 33 percent of all Joint Commission-accredited hospitals reporting accountability measure performance data for 2012.

Avista Adventist Hospital and each of the hospitals that were named as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures must: 1) achieve cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures; 2) achieve performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there are at least 30 denominator cases; and 3) have at least one core measure set that has a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and within that measure set all applicable individual accountability measures have a performance rate of 95 percent or above. A 95 percent score means a hospital provided an evidence-based practice 95 times out of 100 opportunities. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice – examples include giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients, giving antibiotics one hour before surgery, or providing a home management plan of care for children with asthma.

Avista Adventist Hospital and all the Top Performer hospitals have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality improvement and they should be proud of their achievement," says Mark R. Chassin, M.D., FACP, M.P.P., M.P.H., president and chief executive officer, The Joint Commission.

In addition to being included in today's release of The Joint Commission's "Improving America's Hospitals" annual report, Avista Adventist Hospital will be recognized on The Joint Commission's Quality Check website (www.qualitycheck.org). The Top Performer program will be featured in the December issues of The Joint Commission Perspectives and The Source.

The Leapfrog Group's Hospital Survey

The Leapfrog Hospital Survey is the gold standard for comparing hospitals' performance on the national standards of safety, quality, and efficiency that are most relevant to consumers and purchasers of care. Hospitals that participate in The Leapfrog Hospital Survey achieve hospital-wide improvements that translate into millions of lives and dollars saved.

Leapfrog's public reporting initiatives offer valuable benchmarking capabilities to hospitals, as well as providing consumers and purchasers of healthcare with the information they need on the quality and safety of their hospitals.

"It is a true honor to achieve an "A" rating from the Leapfrog Group since a relatively small percentage of hospitals are able to garner this accolade. It speaks to the hard work and dedication of every associate working at Avista Adventist Hospital, and it's my privilege to be part of such an outstanding organization," says Dennis Barts, CEO, Avista Adventist Hospital.

"The multiple Joint Commission honors and the "A" rating from The Leapfrog Group, validate the significant investment in quality we make on a day-to-day basis from the bedside to the board room, demonstrating our commitment to maintaining a culture of excellence," says Dennis Barts, CEO, Avista Adventist Hospital. "Achieving Joint Commission certification for normal delivery in our New Life Center is a major acknowledgement of our dedication to providing an outstanding and a safe delivery experience for women and their families, while continually improving the care we provide."

"We understand that what matters most to patients at Avista Adventist Hospital is safe, effective care. That's why Avista has made a commitment to accreditation and to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes. Avista Adventist Hospital is proud to receive the distinction of being a Joint Commission Top Performer on Key Quality Measures, a Gold Seal recipient and a Leapfrog-designated "A" hospital," says Dennis Barts, CEO, Avista Adventist Hospital.
