Leading Edge Robotic Surgery

Robotic Surgery - The da Vinci® Surgical System

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a condition that may require surgery, you owe it to yourself to learn about all of your medical options, including the most effective, least invasive surgical treatments available.

The da Vinci® Surgical System provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, putting a surgeon's hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform.

Performing the Most Complex and Delicate Procedures

The da Vinci System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures such as prostatectomy, through very small incisions with unmatched precision.

The da Vinci® Surgical Suite is a robotic system outfitted with a high-resolution camera and multiple arms equipped with micro instruments. Your surgeon sits at a console next to the patient and views a magnified 3D image on a screen of your actual surgical site in your body (not a virtual image). He or she uses the EndoWrist instruments to access your anatomy through a series of small incisions.

State-of-the-Art Robotics and Computer Technologies

State-of-the-art robotics and computer technologies scale, filter and seamlessly translate your surgeon's hand movements into precise micro-movements of the medical instruments. These instruments or 'hands' can rotate 360 degrees and include a tremor control feature. Under the guidance of a skilled surgeon, they are so precise they can thread a tiny needle.

Patient benefits from da Vinci minimally invasive procedures as compared to standard procedures may include:

  • Significantly less pain

  • Less blood loss

  • Less scarring

  • Shorter recovery time

  • A faster return to normal daily activities

  • And in many cases, better clinical outcomes

  • Since its introduction in 1995, robotics (the da Vinci Surgical System) has been used successfully in tens of thousands of procedures. Its safety and effectiveness have been documented in hundreds of clinical publications and extensive literature that supports its use for a wide range of surgical specialties. Learn more about clinical evidence for a wide range of robotics procedures.

The unmatched precision of robotics offers you the potential for a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less risk of infection, less blood loss, less risk of needing a transfusion, less scarring, faster recovery and a quicker return to your normal everyday activities. Compared to a traditional approach, your surgeon will also experience major advantages from utilizing robotic technology that translate into benefits for you. For example, robotics offers your surgeon greater precision, increased range of motion, improved dexterity, enhanced visualization and improved access to your surgical site.  Watch a video about the da Vinci® Surgical System.

Clinical studies suggest that the extended capabilities offered by robotics may help surgeons provide better clinical outcomes compared to conventional open and minimally invasive surgery - for example, better long term cancer control and a lower incidence of impotence and incontinence with prostatectomy. Robotics also offers better cosmetic results with less scarring. Thyroidectomies and parathyroidectomies can now be performed through small incisions under your arm versus a large incision across your neck. These are just a few of the benefits related to specific procedures; your doctor at the PRI can explain the advantages of robotics as it relates to your condition.

Our partner physicians at Centura Health hospitals perform surgeries in a wide range of specialty areas, including prostatectomy and urology, gynecology, ENT, heart and general surgery.
