Every year in Castle Rock and surrounding areas, hundreds of people are diagnosed with cancer.

 

As our community grows, that number is projected to climb into the thousands. Yet, we do not have a facility in town equipped to treat them.

As a result, our neighbors diagnosed with cancer in Castle Rock must travel to find treatment. In most other circumstances, a 30- to 45-minute car ride presents a mild inconvenience. But for those fighting for their lives, the commute is physically and emotionally draining—especially for those receiving treatment multiple times a week, for months at a time

The time has come to bring cancer care to Castle Rock for our neighbors, our loved ones, and ourselves.

Centura Health is investing nearly $50 million to construct the building that, with community support, could be the future home of cancer care in Castle Rock. Our community has already raised $620,000, and philanthropic gifts will continue to help us to accelerate our goal of $14 million. With your support, we can build this legacy for a healthier community, closer to home.

Melissa’s Story

When Melissa Sanchez’s doctors found a golf ball-sized tumor, it was diagnosed as stage 3 melanoma. Doctors were amazed she was alive.
At that point, Melissa recalls: “I was terrified, confused, sad, and angry. Nothing made sense. You’re left to choose your war plan from the options, without the confidence in knowing if your choice will save your life.”

Melissa’s first step was leaning on her faith and willpower. “I believe in the power of prayer. I needed to be strong for my children. The first step is to get up. The second is to show up, but don’t just show up—show up in style with a smile.”
Staying close to home for treatment is something she dreams of seeing for her entire community. It will impact each of us eventually, be it personally or someone we love.

Melissa shares: “The anxiety and emotional tolls are overwhelming, even physically draining. Every second you spend traveling to and from treatments feels like eternity. You learn just how long a car ride can be, when all you want is for treatment to be done. Our community deserves to have these services close to home. We have a beautiful hospital with amazing doctors and nurses, and this is the next step in providing care for our community.”

Marcy’s Story

Marcy Blair says a mammogram saved her life in 2002. She was one of the “one in eight” women diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
As a young, healthy, and athletic woman, the diagnosis was both shocking and overwhelming. Marcy asked herself: “Where do I go, and what is my next step? How do I decide what to choose and make decisions to win the battle?”

Her choice was eight rounds of chemo and 37 rounds of radiation. Forty-five anxiety-filled round trips for treatment.

“Those are some of the longest car rides you will ever have. Especially hard was the chemo; the anxiety builds with every mile. I also required rides to my appointments, which meant relying on wonderful friends and family for those trips, for which I am forever grateful.”

Marcy describes treatment as “a mental anguish in addition to the physical.” Each trip left her emotionally drained. She says if treatment were close to home, it would have helped her tremendously.
Nearly 20 years later, thankfully she is in full remission. Now, the vision of cancer care at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital—to build a cancer care center right here—has her full support.

Not-for-profit health systems play vital roles in their communities by allocating resources and developing services based on the healthcare needs of residents. Any excess of revenue over expenses realized are not distributed to shareholders; instead, these funds are invested to further the organization’s mission through capital improvements, new equipment and technology, and/or new programs and services.

Centura Health has invested $211,000,000 since Castle Rock Adventist Hospital’s opening, and recently committed an additional $43,000,000 in this phase of growth to construct a new medical office building. With additional investment from the community, this building will become the future home of high-quality cancer care in Castle Rock.

As a non-profit hospital, our modest margins are re-invested back into the community we serve. A philanthropic campaign raising a minimum of $14,000,000 will accelerate cancer services in Castle Rock by a decade! This shared vision requires support from our community—and the value proposition is critical to the continued health and overall well-being of Castle Rock.

This effort will be led by a volunteer Campaign Committee with strong partnership and support from Castle Rock Adventist Hospital leaders and staff, physicians, and other key stakeholders in the community.
