Important information regarding the SelectHealth Value Plan

Updated: September 29, 2023 at 10 a.m. MT

As a mission-driven, nonprofit health system, CommonSpirit Health believes every patient deserves access to high-quality healthcare, and we work hard to ensure we meet our patients’ needs and bring essential medical services to our communities.

Over the last several months, we have been actively negotiating with SelectHealth – one of the largest and most profitable insurance companies in Utah – to reach an agreement that puts patients first and keeps Holy Cross Hospital – Davis and its affiliated physicians and clinics in-network for our patients.

Unfortunately, SelectHealth sent notices to patients indicating that they will no longer have in-network access to Holy Cross Hospital - Davis as of Jan. 1, 2024. With three more months before contract expiration, we were surprised and disappointed that SelectHealth would put their members' access to care in such jeopardy.

Without this agreement, nearly 300,000 patients enrolled in the SelectHealth - Value plan will no longer have access to in-network services from Holy Cross Hospital – Davis or its providers on Jan. 1, 2024. We deeply value our patients and are doing everything we can to ensure we remain in-network with SelectHealth and maintain your access to the doctors and providers you know and trust.

CommonSpirit is making all efforts to continue negotiations, and it is our hope that SelectHealth will agree to a new, responsible contract that maintains access to essential services for patients of Holy Cross Hospital – Davis and its providers on/before Dec. 31, 2023.

Protecting access and choice

Holy Cross Hospital – Davis has been caring for our communities for nearly 50 years. We remain willing to negotiate with SelectHealth in good faith and have provided multiple counter proposals in the negotiation. Our goals in working with SelectHealth include:

  • Reach a new agreement with SelectHealth to avoid disruption for patients and members of our community who are insured through SelectHealth.

  • Protect access to our physicians, nurses and essential services.

  • Ensure our ability to continue delivering on our mission and to provide quality services now and in the future.

By removing Holy Cross Hospital - Davis and its providers from the Value Plan, SelectHealth insured patients would no longer have in-network access to hospitals, doctors and services they rely on. This means:

  • Limited access and choice in Davis County for nearly 300,000 patients.

  • Being forced to travel greater distances to receive care – especially specialized care like cardiac cath lab, oncology radiation therapy, neonatal care (NICU Level III), behavioral health, accredited stroke centers and more.

Continuity of Care benefits

If no agreement is reached, patients currently in active treatment, have appointments or procedures scheduled, or have been treated by a physician over the last several months may qualify for protected in-network access through Continuity of Care benefits.

Continuity of Care is intended to protect patients from having to change providers or having care delayed or disrupted if an agreement between a health plan and provider is terminated. This benefit is a state law, and SelectHealth, like all licensed health plans, must abide by the requirements.

Health care conditions that may be covered by Continuity of Care include:

  • Acute services needing ongoing treatment, such as chemotherapy, hyperbaric treatment and radiation therapy;
  • Chronic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, orthopedic issues and many others;
  • Maternity-related care;
  • Pediatric care between the ages of birth and 36 months;
  • Services related to a terminal illness;
  • Authorized surgeries or other procedures scheduled to occur within 180 days of the contract’s termination; or
  • Other services previously authorized by SelectHealth

Frequently asked questions

Unless we mutually agree with SelectHealth to a new contract on/before Dec. 31, 2023, Holy Cross Hospital – Davis and its providers would be out-of-network for patients insured under the Select Health – Value plan beginning Jan. 1, 2024.

Today, the SelectHealth – Value plan is offered on the Utah Insurance Marketplace and serves nearly 300,000 members, which is nearly 85% of consumers who purchase insurance through the exchange. If SelectHealth does not agree to a new, responsible contract with CommonSpirit, nearly 85% of individuals on the Utah Insurance Marketplace Exchange will have significantly reduced access to care and choice.

When CommonSpirit acquired the Holy Cross hospitals on May 1, 2023, SelectHealth was the only major insurer who would not agree to transition its contracts to CommonSpirit under the same terms, rates and contract length. Instead, SelectHealth – one of the largest profit-focused insurers in Utah – is proposing more than a 20-percent reduction in reimbursement for the care Holy Cross Hospital – Davis provides its community.

Despite SelectHealth’s strong earnings, SelectHealth is proposing material reimbursement reductions on employer-sponsored insurance and the complete removal of access to our community hospital for people who purchase insurance as an individual. All this at a time when hospitals are facing historic wage and supply inflation and continued fallout from the pandemic.

CommonSpirit desires to work toward an agreement that protects access to our providers and essential services, while ensuring our ability to continue delivering on our mission and to provide quality services now and in the future.
