Genetic counseling is the first step in the genetic testing process. At your appointment, you and your genetic counselor will use your family history and genetic information to estimate your risks for certain diseases and the risk of an inherited cancer in your family, discuss ways to screen for and prevent cancer or other genetic disease based on your risks, review the pros and cons of genetic lab testing, and decide if genetic testing is right for you based on your particular risks and concerns.
