Quality of sleep can have a big impact on a person’s life. Poor sleep can cause an increased risk for coronary artery disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, memory issues, mood changes and even stroke.
At the Sleep Disorder Center at Porter Hospital our sleep experts will work with you to understand the full extent of your sleep issues and treatment options that will help you create healthy sleep patterns and give you a restful night’s sleep.
Our Services
If you’re experiencing symptoms of sleep disorders, including snoring, frequent daytime sleepiness and trouble staying asleep, we offer the following services to provide you with a targeted sleep plan that will help alleviate your symptoms.
Sleep apnea treatment
The Sleep Disorder Center at Porter Hospital offers an innovative surgical treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). No masks, no machines, just sleep.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) affects 22 million Americans and occurs when the soft tissues in the airway collapse during sleep and block the flow of oxygen. This repetitive cycle can severely affect a person’s daily activities by increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, mood, memory and even death.
Help beyond CPAP
We know that most people use a CPAP machine to mitigate the risks of OSA, but with tubing and masks, it can make sleep even more difficult. That’s why the Sleep Disorder Center at Porter Hospital offers a surgical option to treat OSA. This new surgical treatment works as follows:
- A device is surgically placed under the skin through three small incisions during an outpatient procedure.
- This device works inside the body to deliver mild stimulation to key airway muscles — allowing them to stay open during sleep.
- The patient uses a small handheld remote to turn the device on during sleep and off when awake.
This innovative surgical treatment will benefit those who:
- have been diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea
- are unable to use or receive consistent benefit from CPAP
- are not significantly overweight
- are over age 18
This surgical treatment has been shown to significantly reduce the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Proper treatment may lead to an increase in the ability to perform daily tasks and a decrease in risks associated with untreated OSA including accidents (e.g., motor vehicle accidents), hypertension, stroke, diabetes, vascular disease, heart failure, and early mortality.
