Kidney Transplant
The Centura Kidney Transplant program is an essential component of Centura Health’s medical and surgical strategy to care for all patients with chronic kidney disease.
Kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment option for severe chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. With a kidney transplant, you will be able to lead a better life, free of dialysis and its potential complications. You can eat a less restricted healthy diet and drink as much fluid as you want. If you are not yet on dialysis, an early kidney transplant will allow you to avoid having to start.
The best way to find out if you are eligible for a kidney transplant is to undergo a kidney transplant evaluation. This includes an assessment by a medical kidney specialist, a transplant surgeon, a social worker, a nutritionist, a pharmacist and a financial specialist. You will also undergo additional testing which will help the team decide the best course of treatment for you.

I want to donate a kidney to a friend/family member. How do I start the process?
Transplant centers cannot initiate contact with donors. If you are interested in donating a kidney, you must contact our office at 303-778-5797 so we can start the process. Once you have let us know you are interested in donating, we can begin gathering information about your health and start the evaluation process.
Am I eligible to be a donor?
There are some health restrictions to donation. We do not want to harm you, the donor, in an effort to help the recipient. The best way to find out if you could safely donate is to undergo a living donor evaluation. This includes meeting with an independent living donor advocate, a nephrologist, a surgeon, and the entire team. During the evaluation we will perform tests and meet with you to decide if it is safe for you to donate.
How long does the evaluation take?
The evaluation process can be as quick as 1 day or be much longer, depending on your health and availability. Regardless of the how long the evaluation takes, our primary goal is to keep you safe.
Is it safe to donate a kidney?
Can I have a normal life with one kidney? Yes, people with one kidney can, and do, lead normal lives. There are risks with the surgery, just like any other surgery, and our surgeons will explain those risks during the evaluation process. You may have to be more careful about your health and certain medications after donating a kidney, but our donors can tell you that kidney donation is a rewarding experience.
