Porter Adventist Hospital

Adult Psychiatric Inpatient Unit

The acute care  unit at Porter Adventist Hospital provides psychiatric hospitalization for adult patients with severe mental health conditions such as: schizophrenia, major depression and anxiety disorders.

Hospitalization includes an active treatment program utilizing behavioral therapy groups, occupational and recreational therapy groups, nursing groups, and one-on-one counseling. Each patient has a social worker who coordinates care, and a psychiatrist who regularly consults on medication and all aspects of their care. The average length of stay for most patients is five to six days, although, this may vary depending upon medical needs.

Porter Adventist Hospital is a TOBACCO-FREE CAMPUS. There is no smoking or use of other tobacco products (chewing, dipping, etc.) on this unit or anywhere else on the hospital campus. For our patients who do smoke we will provide nicotine patches or gum to help with this transition.

  • Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment Services

    • Ongoing medication consultation and treatment coordination with a licensed psychiatrist.
    • Coordination of services and discharge planning with a masters-level social worker.
    • One-on-one counseling with mental health counselors.
    • Daily group sessions with registered nurses, mental health counselors, occupational therapists, and recreation therapists.
  • Criteria for Admission

Acute care inpatient hospitalization is the most restrictive level of care in behavioral health and is usually reserved for situations where the patient requires a highly structured environment to:

    • Prevent harm to self.
    • Prevent harm to others due to psychiatric illness or condition.
    • Prevent harm from grossly impaired functioning due to psychiatric illness.
    • Mania or psychosis that is unable to be safely managed on an outpatient basis.

Those who require a less restrictive level of care than inpatient acute care may seek admission in the Porter Adventist Hospital Mental Health IOP or The Centre for Behavioral Health.

Patients who are no longer in need of inpatient acute care services may be referred to the Porter Adventist Hospital’s Intensive Outpatient Program or the Centre for Behavioral Health for ongoing treatment when appropriate.
