About Us

"A tradition of community healthcare since 1938" St. Thomas Foundation About Us Nuns

Yesterday -

In 1938 six Benedictine Sisters from Yankton, SD arrived in Cañon City, beginning a mission of healing and ministry by establishing St. Thomas More Hospital.  Together they laid the groundwork for the future of non-profit, religious-based healthcare in Fremont County.

There is no questioning the faith and dedication that led the Benedictine Sisters to Fremont County over seventy-one years ago.  Thus began a mission of caring for anyone, rich or poor, from birth until death.  This is the heritage we share with our founding Sisters.  We take great pride in their commitment, faith
and dedication as we strive to carry on their good works for God and his people in Fremont County and the surrounding areas.

Today -
Since it's founding in 1938, St. Thomas More Hospital has been more than an object of community pride; it is an indispensable health resource in Fremont and surrounding counties.  Over the years St. Thomas More Hospital has grown from a small, 20-bed hospital, staffed by eight Sisters and two lay nurses to a comprehensive medical facility.  St. Thomas More Hospital is a unique facility located in a rural setting, offering our patients the best of technology and medical capabilities.  St. Thomas More Hospital fulfills a crucial role in the lives of so many and we are committed to preserving the viability of healthcare in our region.

In 2004 a major expansion and renovation of St. Thomas More Hospital was completed.   St. Thomas More Health Foundation completed the largest and most successful campaign in Fremont County raising $2.5 million for state-of-the-art surgical equipment, intensive care rooms and a warm water therapy pool.

Tomorrow -
The St. Thomas More Health Foundation provides the ability to build permanent funds for healthcare needs into the future.  Our community has stepped forward through generous donations that have profoundly touched lives.

Thank you, our friends, for your kindness throughout the years.
