BCOE at SMC Nationally Recognized by the National Consortium of Breast Centers

November 21, 2016

(PUEBLO, COLO.) The Breast Center of Excellence at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center has been recognized for the second year in a row as a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence in the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program (NQMBC). This distinguished honor is valid for one year and represents a commitment by St. Mary-Corwin to provide the highest level of quality in breast care to patients in Pueblo and surrounding communities.

The National Consortium of Breast Centers promotes excellence in breast health care for the general public and is proud to recognize St. Mary-Corwin as a certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence. The National Quality Measures for Breast Centers were developed by referencing the Health Care Advisory Board's Clinical Quality Dash Board for breast centers published in the fall of 2004. The National Quality Measures for Breast Centers reflect more than six years of work, which has culminated in the adoption of more than 33 National Quality Indicators.

This distinction illustrates the Breast Center of Excellences ongoing commitment to provide the most leading-edge and high-quality breast care to patients in our communities, said Johanna Shearer, director, imaging and cath lab services, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. With ever-evolving medical advancements and as the treatment for breast cancer continues to improve, a multi-disciplinary, coordinated method remains the most effective approach to gaining successful outcomes. This nationally recognized level of excellence, along with our other prestigious designations and accreditations, affirms our devotion to women and men throughout southern Colorado who are diagnosed with breast cancer and need access to the best care.

The American Cancer Society estimates that almost 246,660 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed by the end of 2016, and approximately 40,450 women in the U.S. will die from the disease this year. Early detection is key, and the treatment options provided by St. Mary-Corwins Breast Center of Excellence are essential in improving these statistics. From screening and diagnosis to treatment and counseling, the Breast Center of Excellence is specifically designed to meet the needs of patients with breast problems, breast cancer, or general concerns about breast health.
