The Birth Place At St. Mary-Corwin Opens Southeastern Colorados First Human Milk Donation And Outreach Center

(PUEBLO, COLO.) The Birth Place at St. Mary-Corwin has joined the network of Mothers Milk Bank (MMB), a Colorado-based, nonprofit program benefiting women and babies nationwide, to open a human milk Donation and Outreach Center on the hospitals campus. The Donation and Outreach Center, also known as a milk depot, is the first of its kind in the region, making it easy and convenient for mothers with extra milk to make a difference in babies lives by conveniently donating their excess milk.

As a member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA), MMB screens, collects, processes and dispenses donated human milk as a community service, providing human milk to babies whose own mothers cannot supply the milk to meet their babys needs. The components of donated milk are unmatched by any commercial formula; immune properties, growth factors, hormones, enzymes and many other factors that optimize the health of infants are present.

St. Mary-Corwins Donation and Outreach Center will provide a convenient option, serving the southern tier of Colorado, as a safe, controlled collection point where women can donate their mothers milk for premature and at risk infants in need, said Joanne DeLorm, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, The Birth Place at St. Mary-Corwin.We know that breast milk is best. Over the past three years, we have used human milk from the Mothers Milk Bank and are proud to be the first in our region to provide this great community service.

Milk Bank donors are healthy moms who have an abundant milk supply. They each undergo a detailed medical and lactation history screening to ensure they meet the donor requirements.

A program of Rocky Mountain Childrens Health Foundation, MMB is one of 13 operating donor human milk banks in North America. MMB in Colorado consistently provides more milk to hospitals than any other non-profit milk bank. The milk is sent to more than 120 different hospitals in 24 states supplying milk to babies across the country that have allergies to formula, certain illnesses or need human milk to thrive.
