A Bright Future for Kidney Patients- Fluorescence Imaging Revolutionizes the Treatment of Renal Tumors at St. Anthony Hospital
This innovative surgical approach increases the likelihood of only removing the affected portion of the kidney which affords instead of removing the entire kidney. Patients receiving a partial nephrectomy are afforded a higher quality of life and documented long term survival benefits. St. Anthony Hospital is the first in Colorado and the surrounding states to utilize the enhanced imaging guidance system for the treatment of renal tumors and is among a small select group of hospitals in the country to have this technology.
Approximately 4 out of 5 patients with small renal masses are having their entire kidney removed. Studies suggest that patients treated with a Radical Nephrectomy experience more Cardiovascular events and as well as an increased mortality rate over patients treated with a Partial Nephrectomy. In addition, patients receiving a Partial Nephrectomy are three times less likely to develop Chronic Kidney Disease than those that undergo a Radical Nephrectomy.
When asked about the new technology Dr. Diane Hartman said, "I am very pleased that St. Anthony Hospital has made a commitment to be on the cutting edge of robotic surgery technology. The fluorescence image-guided upgrade will allow for better visualization of the renal vasculature, which is a critical step in performing a robotic partial nephrectomy. This technology is a definite improvement over traditional surgery and I am delighted to be able to offer this to my patients." Dr. Derek Zukosky added, This new camera allows us to see vasculature in a way that will improve surgical efficiency and safety. The ability to differentiate healthy perfused kidney versus tumor will result in improved oncologic outcomes."
