Castle Rock Adventist Health Campus adds innovative technology that connects rural hospitals with stroke experts across the state

ENGLEWOOD (Aug. 13, 2012) Centura Health recently announced the expansion of its Centura Health Stroke Network through the addition of telestroke at Castle Rock Adventist Health Campus, now the second Centura Health entity providing enhanced stroke services in Colorado communities through telestrokes state-of-the-art, on-demand advancements.

Through telestrokes secure high-speed network videoconferencing and image-sharing technology, Centura Health can connect teams at remote facilities across Colorado with Centura Health specialists in real time to rapidly assess and treat patients exhibiting signs of stroke, narrowing the window of time necessary to minimize permanent injury to the brain. Castle Rock Adventist Health Campus in Castle Rock becomes the second entity in Centura Healths statewide network to connect with stroke teams at Metro Denvers Littleton Adventist Hospital, an acute certified stroke center with comprehensive capability. Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango was the first to launch the service in January 2012. Additional statewide rural and non-rural expansion is planned over the next twelve months.

ABOUT TELESTROKE:

  • Telestroke is a web-based technology that allows neurologists located at Littleton Adventist Hospital in Metro Denver to assist providers in the diagnosis and treatment of patients who arrive at the hospital emergency department with a suspected stroke.
  • In the emergency department exam room, there is a video camera system, microphone and computer that allow neurologists to view the patient and communicate with physicians, perform a neurological examination including the complete National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, and directly view computed tomography (CT) scans to evaluate for intracranial hemorrhage or conditions that may mimic stroke in clinical presentation.
  • Telestroke is enhanced by Centura Healths strong physician talent, experience and commitment to provide stroke outreach to patients and families, and to collaborate with rural physicians throughout Colorado to strengthen the delivery of stroke care.

QUOTES:

  • Our commitment to increase health care value across Colorado calls us to improve the availability and accessibility of health care services across the state of Colorado, said Gary Campbell, president and CEO of Centura Health. This second telestroke connection will further deliver valuable expertise through our statewide Centura Health Stroke Network, reducing disparities in acute stroke care for Colorado communities.
  • Stroke is one of the most delicate health care scenarios, where access to the right expertise at the right moment can make all the difference, said Rhonda Long, Centura Healths system service line director of neurosciences. By connecting with the stroke teams at Little Adventist Hospital in real-time, doctors in Castle Rock can provide that expertise at the exact critical moment its needed, which can make an enormous difference in the lives of stroke victims and their families.
  • The most exciting aspect of adding telestroke capabilities is to further enhance our ability to provide state-of-the-art stroke care to our patients in this community, says Devin Bateman, M.D., medical director, emergency medicine, Castle Rock Adventist Health Campus. Telestroke gives us access to stroke neurologists who can interact rapidly and directly with our patients which is particularly important for those who qualify for thrombolytic therapy, when time is of the essence.

ABOUT THE CENTURA HEALTH STROKE NETWORK OF CARE:

  • The Centura Health Stroke Network is entrusted with nearly 6,000 acute stroke inpatients and recovering stroke outpatients every year.
  • Quality compassionate care has earned the Centura Health Stroke Network several distinctions and awards including Comprehensive or Acute Primary Stroke Centers with the Joint Commission Seal of Approval for exceptional stroke care and The American Heart Association and The American Stroke Association Get With the Guidelines.
  • Centura Healths Stroke Network represents six of the states eleven total certified stroke centers, with 30 years of combined certified years between our centers. Two of our six certified stroke centers are also comprehensive capable, meaning that advanced interventions can be performed to remove or dissolve the clot directly in the brain.
  • Through acute rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, and Centura Health at Home services, patients receive preventative care and rehabilitation services where they live, including patients in Colorados rural communities.
