Centura Health Teleconcussion Program Receives Innovation Award

(CENTENNIAL, COLO.) Concussion Consultants at Centura Health, the region's health care leader, has been awarded the 2017 Patient-Centered Innovation Award from the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians for its teleconcussion program. The Centura Health teleconcussion program is targeted to provide care in mountain and rural communities including Grand, Lake, Rio Grande and Summit Counties.

Residents and visitors of these counties previously faced driving hundreds of miles in potentially hazardous driving conditions to receive care for concussion management. Dr. Rocky Khosla, a southern Colorado Centura Health Physician Group family physician with added qualifications in Sports Medicine and Brain Injury Medicine, serves as the medical director of St. Mary-Corwin Concussion Consultants in Pueblo, Colo. and developed the teleconcussion program. In Summit County, Dr. Koshla partnered with Jennifer Kagan, a trauma and emergency room nurse at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco, to expand the program and more importantly, keep care in the local community.

"Dr. Khosla has shared his concussion knowledge and experience with other care providers in the community including ski patrollers, RNs and physicians," said Kagen. "The tele-concussion program has enhanced communication among the care team members and paved the way for a community-based concussion prevention and return to play program involving teachers, athletic trainers, coaches, parents and the primary care providers."

The teleconcussion services include two-way audio visual communication for Dr. Khosla to provide his expertise and recommendations for care. "I click onto a camera system and we look at the patient together. I do a fairly comprehensive evaluation of the patient and then formulate a plan to see whether we need imaging, rehab or if there are issues the primary care physician should be aware of," Dr. Khosla explains.

Centura Health's decision to expand concussion management services to the mountain communities was based on an evaluation of the community's needs and the high prevalence of diagnoses of traumatic brain injury. Centura Health is committed to delivering solutions that expand its legacy of delivering high-value care.

Dr. Khosla and the teleconcussion program will be recognized during an awards luncheon at the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians Annual Summit on Friday, April 21 in Colorado Springs.

Today, family physicians provide more care for America's underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine's cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
