CPOE Launches at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) went into practice this morning at Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. CPOE means that physicians will now enter patient orders directly into the patients electronic health record. With the launch of this new system, Penrose-St. Francis ranks in the top 10 percent of the nations hospitals for having a fully-integrated electronic medical records system.

CPOE is all about patient safety. CPOE will optimize safe, efficient, patient care by decreasing medication errors, decreasing delays in care and by increasing efficiency. This will be accomplished by enabling the physicians and providers to enter orders directly into the MEDITECH system which will reduce the amount of time elapsed from the physicians order to the patients care. This new technology replaces handwritten physician and medication orders with clear, precise, typed orders which will lead to improved patient care.

For patients, there are several advantages, including:

The positive impact of this new process on patient safety cannot be overstated, said Dr. Pete Walsh, Vice President of Medical Affairs. When physicians enter orders directly into the system, the risk of misinterpreting orders is substantially decreased. In addition, specialized warnings alert the physician to any potential negative interactions or allergies which enhances patient safety.
