Dorcy Cancer Center Celebrates 5th Anniversary
Community invited to open house event
Part of the $57 million expansion project at St. Mary-Corwin several years ago, the cancer center officially opened on April 22, 2006. Since then, the multidisciplinary team of physicians and clinical and support staff have treated and provided services for nearly 4,000 patients.
Although the celebration recognizes the 5th anniversary of the new cancer center facility, St. Mary-Corwin has been treating cancer patients since 1954. As technology and information on treating cancer continued to develop, so did the hospitals commitment to providing state-of-the-art cancer care to people in Southern Colorado. St. Mary-Corwin introduced radiation oncology in 1978 with a new radiation therapy center. The new center provided the latest in technology. At that time there was no other cancer center south of Colorado Springs or north of Santa Fe, NM, using radiation therapy to treat cancer. That still holds true today.
St. Mary-Corwin was one of the first in the country to use IMPAC, an electronic medical record program for radiation therapy and remains one of the sites for early implementation of new innovations in this software. The hospital remained at the forefront of comprehensive cancer care when the new Dorcy Cancer Center was opened in 2006, featuring a new Trilogy linear accelerator, the first in Colorado for the treatment of cancer.
The Dorcy Cancer Center remains Southern Colorados only fully comprehensive cancer center in Southern Colorado between Colorado Springs and Santa Fe with a complete range of services for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and support of cancer patients and their families - all under one roof.
Accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the cancer center is supported by highly reputable national organizations whose programs enhance the patient experience. As one of only two, Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence Community Affiliates in Colorado, the Dorcy Cancer Center is a collaborative partner with other national organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the American Cancer Society, which provides a wig salon offering wigs, scarves, prostheses and bras free of charge.
The broad spectrum of services span from radiation therapies, medical oncology in collaboration with Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers, a convenient ambulatory infusion center, the C.A.R.E.S Program for patients with head and neck cancers, an in-patient oncology unit, revolutionary imaging technologies including an in-house PET/CT, new approaches to pain management, caring and compassionate palliative care, a patient care coordinator and breast cancer navigator, clinical trials, a lymphedema program, genetic counseling Healing Arts" classes, and a Cancer Resource Library.
Oncology is a priority area of focus for Centura Health, the healthcare network which includes St. Mary-Corwin.
