Dr. John Steven Lavengood of Durango Family Medicine Named Physician of the Year by the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians

(AURORA, COLO.) The Colorado Academy of Family Physician is pleased to announce that John Steven Steve Lavengood, M.D., of Durango has been named Family Physician of the Year.

Dr. Lavengood practices full spectrum family medicine at Mercy Family Medicine, a Centura Health Physician Group clinic in Durango, and is the director of primary care services at Mercy Regional Medical Center.

Colleagues recognize Dr. Lavengood as a dedicated and compassionate physician who is not only beloved by his patients (many of whom he has treated for generations), but who has improved primary care in the community.

Dr. Lavengood is clearly an outstanding mentor, physician and colleague. He is a wise counselor, an excellent example of integrity and civility, and is as highly respected as anyone in the practice of family medicine, said Christine Gerding, administrator at Mercy Family Medicine.

Under Dr. Lavengoods leadership, Mercy Family Medicine has received recognition as a Patient Centered Medical Home, and participated in the Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative, work that has been recognized nationally by practice transformation leaders.

Dr. Lavengood received his medical degree from the University of Colorado and completed his residency at Mercy Family Medicine Residency. Hi is an active member of the Durango community, particularly with the Durango Youth Wresting Association and the Durango High School Wrestling Team.

Dr. Lavengood will be recognized during an awards luncheon at the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians Annual Summit on Friday, April 21, in Colorado Springs.
