Event for Young Women and Others at Risk for Breast Cancer

March 23, 2016

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center will host a Caring for the Next Generation of Women", event on Thursday, April 14, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Dorcy Cancer Center Lobby at St. Mary-Corwin, 2004 Lake Ave.This event is geared toward young women and their mothers or guardians who have a family history of breast cancer, as well as others who have been affected by breast cancer or would like additional information about breast health care.

After recently being named a Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) Breast Center of Excellence, St. Mary-Corwin aims to continue to educate consumers on the importance of early breast cancer detection through diagnostic procedures as well as other breast cancer management options. A panel of experts will discuss screening and diagnostic management for young women whose mothers or other family members have been affected by breast cancer in an attempt to educate them on the importance of early prevention when it comes to breast cancer detection and treatments.

It is imperative not only to treat our current breast cancer patients, but to inform the next generation of women who may be affected by this disease, about the importance of screenings and diagnostic strategies that may be lifesaving, said Charlotte Vasile, breast imaging navigator, program manager, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. As a leader in breast health, we feel a responsibility to keep young women informed on this topic so that they can maintain optimal breast health throughout their lives.

According to the National Cancer Institute, those who have a first-degree relative with breast cancer have twice the risk of developing the disease, and those individuals should consider some form of regular diagnostic breast imaging starting at least 10 years before the age of the relatives diagnosis.

Due to the nature of the topics discussed, the event is suitable for women age 16 and older. To reserve a seat, please contact Linda Russell at 719-557-5247.
