Flight For Life Colorado Urges Summer Cycling Safety

(ENGLEWOOD, COLO.) The good news? Residents and tourists are once again clamoring to get outdoors in beautiful Colorado. The bad news? Some of them may be injured in remote areas. Fortunately Flight For Life Colorado, the emergency air medical and critical care transport service of Centura Health, is ready for them.

Following the deaths of five cyclists who were struck by a pickup truck in Michigan last week, cycling safety is one area that deserves attention, said Kathleen Mayer, program director, Flight For Life Colorado. The service transported 17 critically injured cyclists in 2015, and she expects a similar number this year.

If you head out on a bike, I really hope you come back on a bike and not in one of our helicopters, Mayer said. Frequently its not a result of the cyclist doing anything wrong, its an inattentive driver.

Still, there are some things cyclists can do to protect themselves, Mayer said:

  • Wear a helmet
  • Dont bike alone in remote areas
  • Remain aware of traffic

Mayer shared more summer safety tips based on other calls Flight For Life Colorado has been receiving:

  • Supervise young children around water
  • Learn how to manage compressed gases such as propane
  • WEAR SEAT BELTS

We still see a huge number of patients injured because they didnt have their seat belts on, despite all the consumer education out there, Mayer said.
