(ENGLEWOOD, COLO.) Four nurses with Centura Health, the region’s health care leader, were recognized as Nightingale Recipients for 2020, along with eight other Centura nurses chosen for Luminary Awards, during an October virtual ceremony for their contributions in Innovation, Advocacy and Leadership in Clinical Practice.
The awards are annual recognitions from the Colorado Nurses Foundation and Colorado’s regional AHECs, or Area Health Education Centers. According to the Centennial AHEC, the purpose is to “acknowledge the outstanding nurses in our region, whose hard work and dedication improves other's health through their advocacy, innovation, and leadership.”
Centura’s Nightingale Recipients honored for their nursing excellence include Tamara Friend with Centura - Littleton Adventist Hospital, Nancy O’Malley and Jennifer Wilson with Centura - Porter Adventist Hospital, and Tatjana Smith with Centura - Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. Eight other Centura nurses were honored this year among 52 Luminaries in Colorado for their work as well.
“The leadership and hard work of these nurses will resonate far beyond the walls of their hospitals for years to come,” said Rachel Miles, Vice President of Nursing Operations for Centura Health. “They exemplify the clinical excellence and compassionate care that our incredible nursing teams across Centura Health provide every day to thousands of patients in Colorado.”
More than 600 nurses across Colorado were nominated by a colleague, patient or organization. Nominations were submitted at the beginning of the year, and awards are normally given out in May near the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the woman recognized as the founder of modern nursing.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the awards were delayed until October 10, and were announced during a virtual ceremony. There were 52 finalists, or Luminaries, named this year ahead of the ceremony. On Saturday a winner was named in each of 12 categories of excellence.
This award was named after Florence Nightingale following a life of service as an advocate and leader for nurses, whose practices still influence the profession.
