(CANON CITY, COLO) St. Thomas More Hospital (STMH) has announced that the 5Health Fair in Canon City will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Noon at Evangelical Free (E-Free) Church located at 3000 E. Main St. This event is endorsed by the Colorado Medical Society, the Colorado Nurses Association, and the Colorado Hospital Association. More than 800 citizens in Fremont County and surrounding communities attend this event each year.

Were excited to present the 5Health Fair to our community again this year since its our largest annual event that many people look forward to attending each year, said Emma Glancy, STMH manager of wellness programs and site coordinator for the 5Health Fair. Our team has been working hard on coordinating all aspects of this event since December, so were gearing up for another successful year.

Professional, low cost health screenings offered include: blood chemistry screening $35.00, blood cell count $20.00, prostate specific antigen (PSA) test for men $30.00, colon cancer home screening kit $25, Vitamin D $45.00, Vitamin B12 $20.00, Hemoglobin A1C $30.00, testosterone male $35.00, and testosterone female $45.00. The blood chemistry panel gives you information on your blood sugar (glucose), cholesterol, thyroid, triglycerides, liver, kidney, bone and muscle function and may show warning signs of diabetes, heart disease and other concerns. The PSA test, which checks for prostate gland issues and cancer,is appropriate for men over age 40 and can be included to the blood chemistry panel.

5Health Fair features online registration prior to the event. To register online, visit www.9HealthFair.org. Registering online will allow you to bypass the registration and cashier lines the day of the fair because you will pay for your desired screenings by credit card online before the fair. Those who register online receive test results and instructions on how to read the results electronically to your secure account within two weeks. Those who register the day of the fair receive results by mail within four weeks. Those who register online still have to wait in the blood draw line, but the process is streamlined.

Based on the most current research findings, the 9Health Fair Medical Advisory Committee has determined thatfasting is not required (optional) for blood screenings. Participants should follow these tips when participating in the health fair:

  • People with diabetes should not fast
  • Check with your medical provider for specific recommendations
  • Drink plenty of water and continue to take prescription medications
  • Must be 18 years or older to participate in blood screenings

The following screenings are free and provided on a first come, first serve basis: ask a medical question/get a referral, ask a pharmacist, blood pressure, skin screening, foot screening, hand screening, height/weight/body mass index (BMI), diabetes risk assessment, lung function, pulse oximetry, memory screening, hearing, oral health, nutrition, sleep apnea, stress management, vision and eye health, bone health, body in balance, breast screening, prostate/testicular screening and a cardiac risk assessment.

Free pap smear tests for women 21 years of age or older are available. Please call 719-285-2049 to schedule an appointment. Test results will be mailed to you within four weeks.

The hospital provides the majority of staff and volunteers to make the event possible, but we are always looking for volunteers from the community as well, added Glancy. We have volunteer needs in many areas including medical and non-medical, so consider volunteering your time and giving back to the community.

Anyone interested in volunteering for 5Health Fair must contact Nancy Bartkowiak at 719-285-2345 or [email protected]to register. All volunteers receive a $5 breakfast voucher, compliments of the St. Thomas More Health Foundation. The E-Free Church Childrens Ministry provides a breakfast for the duration of the fair as a fundraiser, so participants may purchase breakfast items if they so choose to support their efforts.

5Health Fair also offers an interactive education center that features more than 20 health topics such as alternative healing, mental health services, advanced directives, hospice, diabetes management, cancer education and resources, Womens Wellness Connection, domestic violence/sexual assault education and more.

Free child care will be available to participants, thanks to a sponsorship provided by the St. Thomas More Health Foundation, so that they can partake in the health screenings and education booths. The child care will be provided by the E-Free Church Childrens Ministry.
