Grief and the Holidays
(GARDEN CITY, KAS.) Holidays are often difficult for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one. Some find it helpful to be with family and friends. Others may wish to avoid old sights and sounds. Others will find new ways to acknowledge the season.
"As the holidays approach our thoughts shift to family and friends, those that are with us and those that have died, said Gina Cash, bereavement coordinator. "For this reason the holidays can sometimes be difficult for grieving individuals; that's why it is important to take time for you."
Here are some key points from the Hospice Foundation of America's Holiday Grief Campaign:
- Plan for the approaching holidays. Be aware that this may be a difficult time. The additional stress may affect you emotionally, cognitively and physically; this is a normal reaction
- Recognize that the holidays won't be the same
- If you try to keep everything as it was, you'll be disappointed. Doing things differently can acknowledge the change while preserving continuity with the past
- Be careful not to isolate yourself. It's alright to take time for you but don't cut yourself off from the support of family and friends
- The holidays may affect other family members. Talk over your plans. Respect their choices and needs, and compromise if necessary
- Avoid additional stress. Decide what you really want to do and what can be avoided
Hospice professionals have special training in grief counseling and supportive companioning. To support you this holiday season, Hospice of St. Catherine Hospital will offer two sessions of "Grief and the Holidays" on Tuesday, November 18th. Each session runs 90 minutes and is held in Classroom A of St. Catherine Hospital, 401 E. Spruce. The afternoon class will be held at noon and an evening class will begin at 6:30 pm. Connect with others who have lost a loved one and know you are not alone.
The staff of St. Catherine Hospice is here to support you along your grief journey throughout the year by offering special memorial services, grief education, support groups, an annual bereavement family retreat and a resource library.
