Leapfrog Spring 2017

April 11, 2017

(PUEBLO, COLO.) The Leapfrog Group recently released its Spring 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade (formerly known as the Hospital Safety Score), assigning A through F letter grades to 2,639 hospitals in the U.S. St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center received a B rating once again, one of the regions highest ratings in the national health care quality survey that is designed to provide consumers with helpful information to educate and protect themselves and family members when faced with a hospital stay. Of the hospitals evaluated across the nation, just 706 earned a B rating, and St. Mary-Corwin is the only hospital in Pueblo to earn this score.

Leapfrog releases safety score updates twice a year and evaluates for factors including patient satisfaction outcomes including nurse communication, doctor communication and communication about discharge, as well as infection measures for Clostridium difficile and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Developed under the guidance of Leapfrogs Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F score and represents a hospitals overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. Further, the scores are calculated by top patient safety experts and are then peer-reviewed and fully transparent and free to the public.

The newly released Leapfrog scores illustrate our continuous dedication to providing the best and safest experience for each patient and their unique needs, said Wendi Dammann, administrative director, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. In keeping with our tradition of leading-edge care, and much like our Healthgrades Five Star ratings or our Joint Commission Top Performer on Key Quality Measures award, this Leapfrog rating demonstrates our commitment to providing clinical excellence and superior patient outcomes through a solid foundation of patient safety.

The Leapfrog Group has served as a leading patient safety group for 15 years, and works to ensure that hospitals across the nation are transparent with quality and safety data while sharing that information with the communities they serve. Further, the group aims to provide consumers with tools that will positively enhance the health care they receive, through rigorously rating facilities on their level of care.
