Longmont United Hospital Hosts Health Care Careers Camp for Local Students

(LONGMONT, COLO.) This week, Longmont United Hospital hosted their annual summer health care careers camp, LAUNCH (LUH Adventure University for New Careers in Health care). This week-long camp will provide 12 high school students hands-on experiences while they learn about various health care professions.

Careers in areas such as nursing, therapies, labor and delivery, cardiovascular services, operating room and many more will be highlighted during the program.

“When students consider working in a hospital environment, they immediately think about becoming a doctor or nurse, but there are so many other careers in health care,” says Alissa Kegler, Director of Professional Resources at Longmont United Hospital. “Not everyone wants to become a nurse and what we do is very different than what they see in the media. So we try to expose students to a variety of areas of health care and careers they might be interested in pursuing.”

During the packed week of activities, students will participate in activities such as tours of various hospital departments, hands-on training with the hospital’s interactive simulators, explore a Flight for Life helicopter and ambulance, and earn their CPR, First Aid and Stop the Bleed certifications.

The LAUNCH program was created both in response to community demand and the increasing deficit of health care professionals across the United States.

“Overall, we’re seeing less and less college students graduating with nursing or health care related degrees,” says Kegler. “This program allows us to engage students and get them excited about exploring the possibilities in health care.”

This is the LAUNCH program’s second year in existence. The 2017 LAUNCH program was such a success that the 2018 program has been extended from three to five days to highlight additional areas of health care.

“We had such a positive response from students and the community last year, we knew this should continue as an annual program”, says Stacey Jackson, Volunteer Manager at Longmont United Hospital and the camp’s creator.
