Mercy Introduces 3-D Mammography to Southwest Colorado

(DURANGO, COLO.)Mercy Regional Breast Care Center is pleased to announce the addition of digital tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography.

The state-of-the-art Hologics Selenia Dimensions Mammography System recently installed at Mercy is capable of detecting 30 to 40 percent more invasive breast cancers compared to standard 2-D digital mammography. The new technology helps providers detect lesions with greater accuracy and see them with greater clarity, which can help detect cancer earlier and reduce false-positive recalls and unnecessary biopsies.

Conventional digital mammography produces one image, taken from one angle. This limited view can make it difficult to detect cancers--especially through dense breast tissuebecause a tumor may be obscured by tissue that lies between the x-ray and the tumor. In contrast, breast tomosynthesis takes multiple images of the entire breast, allowing radiologists to view the breast in multiple image layers, or slices, that can be reconstructed into a composite image using the systems software. The composite image allows for examination of areas of concern from all angles.

We are pleased to be the first to bring this technology to southwest Colorado. 3-D mammography will make it easier for doctors to catch breast cancer early and to reduce the chance of doctors seeing a false positive, said Bill Plauth, M.D., Mercys chief medical officer.

The new system, which was funded entirely by contributions to Mercy Health Foundation, complements Mercys other breast diagnostic services including breast ultrasound, breast MRI and specialized laboratory diagnostics. The first screening mammogram using the 3D system was performed at Mercy on June 29.
