Mercy Regional Medical Center Names New Chief Executive

(DURANGO, COLO) Mercy Regional Medical Centers Board of Directors has named Will McConnell, MBA, Ph.D., as the new president and chief executive officer of the hospital.

McConnell replaces outgoing CEO Tom Gessel, who led the hospital since September of 2012 and was promoted last January to become the senior vice president of operations and network development at Centura Health, Mercys parent organization.

McConnell most recently served as Mercys vice president of operations and outreach strategy. In that role, he was responsible for overseeing operations and growth of Mercys 16 primary care and specialty clinics.

Will has demonstrated an ability to lead effectively at Mercy. He is especially adept at strategic planning and physician partnership, said Gessel. I have no doubt that Mercys successwhich ultimately benefits those we servewill continue under Wills leadership.

McConnell joined Mercys Senior Leadership team in 2010. Prior to that, he worked for Carilion Clinic, a six-hospital, not-for-profit health care organization in Roanoke, Virginia.

McConnell earned his Ph.D. and a masters degree at Colorado State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Medical Group Management Association. He is certified as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.

Its truly an honor to lead this organization, McConnell said. The employees and providers who work here are incredibly dedicated to those we serve. That dedication and commitment to excellence shows not only in the recognition Mercy has received, but more importantly in the lives we touch every day, he added.

The Mercy Board has been fortunate to interact with Will regularly over the years and know that Mercy is in capable hands, said Joanne Spina, chair of Mercys Board of Directors. As the healthcare landscape evolves and presents uncertainties, we know that under Wills leadership Mercy will continue to fulfill its mission of serving those in need.
