New and improved treatment for macular degeneration at St. Anthony Hospital
How it works:
Vision loss in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is caused by the growth of abnormal, leaky blood vessels that eventually damage the macula (area of the eye responsible for central vision). EYLEA is a protein engineered to block vaso-endothelial growth factors (VEGF), which are proteins that promote abnormal blood vessel growth. EYLEA has a similar safety and efficacy profile to its predecessors. The difference in the treatment regimen of EYLEA and other VEGF inhibitors is that EYLEA is approved for administration every 8 weeks as opposed to the current anti-VEGF treatments with recommended injections being more-frequent. The decrease in treatment frequency should result in fewer doctor visits, decreased cost, and greater convenience for the individuals receiving the injections.
"With this newly-approved macular degeneration treatment, I now can offer my patients similar results when compared to the previous anti-VEGF medications with regards to stabilizing or improving vision, but with a welcome decrease in dosing frequency which has been proven to be just as effective; this helps to take the guesswork out of when to start tapering treatment, a question on every patients mind," said Nalin Mehta, MD.
