Penrose-St. Francis Named one of the Nations Top 1% of Hospitals in 2014 According to Healthgrades

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has been named an Americas 50 Best, by Healthgrades, which puts Penrose-St. Francis in the top 1% of hospitals nationwide. Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals, evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide. This is the 7th year in a row that Penrose-St. Francis has achieved this distinction.

Across the country, if all hospitals performed at the level of all hospitals achieving this distinction, 157,069 lives could have potentially been saved nationwide between 2010 and 2012. In other words, there was a 23.29% lower risk-adjusted mortality rate for the hospitals among the Healthgrades Americas 50 BestTM Hospitals when compared to all other hospitals in the nation (across 19 procedures and conditions where in-hospital mortality was the clinical outcome).

Being named an Americas 50 Best by Healthgrades for the 7th year in a row really demonstrate the superior care provided by our team of world-class physicians, associates and volunteers, said Margaret Sabin, president and CEO of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. Just a few weeks ago, Penrose-St. Francis attained Magnet Recognition as part of the American Nurses Credentialing Centers Magnet Recognition Program. Having these respected organizations consistently rank us as one of the top hospitals in the nation is a testament to the care patients receive when they come to Penrose-St. Francis.

Variation in hospital performance exists locally as well as nationally. For example, of the 3 hospitals evaluated located in the Colorado Springs, CO area for treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality rates ranged from 0.5% on the low end to 5.4% on the high end, which is an over 10-fold difference in mortality rates.

Today, hospitals are working harder than ever to achieve quality care, which makes this distinction even more significant, said Evan Marks, EVP, Informatics and Strategy, Healthgrades. Consumers can have confidence that a hospital receiving the Americas 50 BestTM designation has demonstrated a steadfast, organizational commitment to quality.

Healthgrades Americas 50 BestTM designation recognizes hospitals for consistent clinical excellence by identifying those that received a Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence for the most consecutive years. To be eligible for the Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence, a hospital had to have been evaluated for its performance in at least 21 of the 30 Healthgrades procedures and conditions, based on Medicare inpatient data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) database.
