Physical Rehabilitation Center to Open

(GARDEN CITY, KAS) Southwest Kansans who needed inpatient rehabilitation because of an accident or medical condition have had to face the added burdens of traveling for care but on July 1st St. Catherine Hospital (SCH) will officially expand its services to include the inpatient Physical Rehabilitation Center.

The center, managed by RehabCare and wholly owned by SCH, will include physical, occupational and speech therapies. The average time in the third-floor center is 10 days to three weeks, depending on the diagnosis. The 10-bed unit offers a comprehensive team approach to help a patient with physical functioning, cognition and emotional outlook. This team consists of the attending physician, nurses, therapists, social worker, dietitian, clinical liaison and program director as well as consultations with additional medical specialties.

Patients have access to whatever services they need with a customized program for each situation. The center is equipped with a gym specifically designed for those who need intensive therapy as well as another specialized facility geared to help with daily-living activities. For example, a washer-dryer, dishwasher, stove and refrigerator are available so patients can redevelop these skills prior to returning home.

Physical rehab better prepares patients to stay at home after discharge and helps reduce re-admissions to the hospital. Rehab rooms are spacious enough to accommodate wheelchairs, feeding poles and walkers. Bathrooms are equipped with roll-in showers, shower chairs and shower wands. Safety features such as grab bars and non-skid bathtubs are also in each room.

A common reason someone may need rehab is a brain injury from stroke or trauma; others are hip replacements and fractures. Certain admission criteria must be met and admission is not diagnosis specific. Other diagnoses include brain dysfunction; spinal cord dysfunction; myelopathy; neurologic disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's; amputation; arthritis; major multiple traumas; severe burns; and congenital disorders such as spina bifida. The team at SCH can provide all the care and treatment to get patients on the road to recovery and make them stronger each day.

Inpatient rehab patients can be referred directly from the Emergency Department and patients may also be referred from a skilled-nursing setting if they would benefit from more intensive therapies to help with the transition back into the community.

An added bonus to the center is new-job creation. New positions include four registered nurses, four licensed practical nurses, and several full- and part-time therapists and therapy assistants. The project entailed collaboration with the leadership teams of SCH and RehabCare, plus Gibson, Mancini and Carmichael & Nelson Architects, Hutton Construction, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The public is invited to tour the facility any time by calling 620-765-1490. An open house is planned for October 1st from 4-6 pm.

* "This is a very exciting time for our local area," said VP Clinical Services/Operations at St. Catherine Hospital, Joben Rieth said. "No longer will southwest Kansans have to travel far from home to get the rehab attention they need. This is not only great for SCH but for the region it serves."

* "We think our community will be impressed with this comprehensive center," said Jessica King, program director. "Anyone who has experienced a debilitating event may be eligible for the program. The goal is to help patients regain function so they can leave the hospital and be as independent as possible when they return home.

* "We want our patients to feel comfortable about going home and being able to go about their daily tasks," King said. "Physical rehabilitation is so important to those who are re-entering their day-to-day lives."
