Porter Adventist Hospital Unveils Colorados First Hybrid Surgical Suite

Ideal for diagnosing and treating Peripheral Arterial Disease

DENVER (Nov. 3, 2011) - Porter Adventist Hospital and the Porter Heart Institute now offer the latest in angiography capabilities, while combining diagnosis and treatment in a single procedure. With the installation of the new Artis zeego multi-axis angiography system from Siemens Healthcare, patients can safely be treated using a less-invasive approach. Porter is Colorados first hospital to install the system.

Traditionally, Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) has been treated through surgery. Now, patients and vascular specialty physicians can benefit from robotic technology that is more flexible and allows the most complex cases to be diagnosed and treated more quickly and accurately. In the event that surgery proves to be the best option, the new hybrid surgical suite allows for an open-surgical case without transferring the patient.

This hybrid suite for coronary and peripheral artery disease treatments will improve the experience for both patient and clinician," said Dr. Eric Weinstein, vascular surgeon with the Porter Heart Institute. The technology provides better images and allows several specialists to work together for the most accurate diagnosis and the best clinical outcomes for our PAD patients."

The hybrid suite is a high-tech angiographic suite within a sterile operating room environment, and allows for both advanced cardiac and vascular surgeries as well as interventional cardiology and endovascular procedures. The largest feature of the suite is the 25-foot retractable, robotic-arm Artis zeego, which has an advanced, C-shaped imaging system that can be positioned at virtually any angle around the patient to produce high-resolution images of the heart and vascular system.

Angiography is a procedure that helps physicians visualize blood vessels in various parts of the body, including the heart, brain, kidneys and lower extremities. After a thin catheter is inserted into an artery leading to the desired body area, an iodine-based dye is injected to highlight the vessels when X-rays are taken. Angiography is often used to determine whether blood vessels are narrowed or blocked. It also makes it possible to combine diagnosis and treatment in a single procedure, for patients who undergo surgery, angioplasty or stent placement.

In addition to addressing these needs, Artis zeegos robotic-assisted positioning enables the 3D-visualization of larger sections of anatomy. This provides doctors with additional information for more accurate diagnosis while potentially reducing procedural radiation dosage.
