Resilience skills topic of next St. Rose ITV presentation

October 26, 2014

(Great Bend, Kas.) - The 10 factors of resilience will be the topic for the next interactive televideo (ITV) presentation at St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgery Center.

The free and open-to-the-public session is set for 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 in the St. Dominic Room. Cathy Pendleton, licensed clinical social worker, will lead the discussion.

The 10 factors of resilience are research-based skills that help us manage stress and add to the peace and fullness of everyday life, said Pendleton of Turning Point: The Center for Hope and Healing. The exciting news is that even when we improve skills in only one of the factors, our overall ability to manage stress is increased.

When someone is living with an illness, Pendleton noted, there is an impact on caregivers too.

It is so important for caregivers to take good care of themselves, Pendleton said. They need the energy and internal reserves to be the kind of supporters they want to be. Building resilience skills is one way to achieve that.

Pendleton outlined the benefits of resilience. Resilient people:

  • Think more clearly
  • Concentrate more easily
  • Become more intuitive
  • Feel more in control of life and emotions
  • Feel less critical of themselves and others
  • Find more meaning in life
  • Become happier and more optimistic
  • Have more fun
  • Become better equipped to manage setbacks

The presentation at St. Rose is part of the Midwest Cancer Alliance (MCA) series of health and wellness events for cancer patients and other members of the community. St. Rose is a member of MCA, the outreach arm of TheUniversity of Kansas Cancer Center.

St. Rose is part of Centura Health, which connects individuals and families across western Kansas and Colorado with more than 6,000 physicians, 15 hospitals, seven senior-living communities, physician practices and clinics, and home-care and hospice services.
