SMC Honors Nurse with Prestigious Daisy Award
(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center recently honored Debra Bottorff, RN, with the prestigious DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in recognition for her compassion, commitment and patient-centered approach to care. The quarterly award, established by the national nonprofit DAISY Foundation, recognizes the extraordinary efforts nurses make in the lives of patients and their families every day.
We are delighted to recognize Deb with the DAISY Award and extending our healing ministry, said Mary Winters, interim chief nursing officer, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. Not only does she possess the clinical skills and compassionate care that are at the heart of the DAISY Award, but she also embodies the core values of St. Mary-Corwin in her work each and every day.
Bottorff, an orthopedic nurse, was nominated by Wendy Velez, a fellow RN who witnessed Bottorff altruistically providing care and support for a patient. During their stay, this patient was apprehensive, but Bottorff took the time to sit with the patient even holding their hand for comfort while helping them to relax. The nomination letter went on to say Her care and compassion should be recognized, as I find this to be exemplary of the kind of care all nurses should provide for patients.
Each quarter, a nurse is chosen as a recipient of the DAISY Award by a selection committee composed of St. Mary-Corwin nursing leadership and peers. During a presentation in front of the nurses colleagues, physicians, patients and visitors, the honoree will receive daisies, a certificate and a sculpture called A Healers Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.
The nonprofit DAISY Foundation, based in Glen Ellen, Calif., was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired Barnes family members to establish the DAISY Award to thank nurses across the country for making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.
