SMC to Host Free Fall-Prevention Program

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center will host a free seven-week fall-prevention program beginning Friday, Sept. 2, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. The program is aimed at empowering adults who are 65 years of age and older to maintain independence while practicing healthy behaviors that reduce the risk of falling. The Stepping On workshop will be held in the Healing Arts Room in the Dorcy Cancer Center, 1004 Lake Ave., and features adult education and self-efficacy principles to help older adults gain the balance and confidence to avoid falls.

The Stepping On program is held in a group environment and is most helpful for those 65 years of age or older who have recently fallen or have a fear of falling. It is geared toward participants who live at home or in an apartment, and who do not have dementia. In the class, participants learn about the risk of falls, strength and balance exercises, home hazards, selecting safe footwear, vision, safety in public places, community mobility, coping after a fall, and understanding how to initiate a medication review.

Falls are a problem in individuals who are aging and can take a serious financial, physical and psychological toll, but falls can be prevented at any age, said Sara Ackerman, trauma nurse coordinator and injury prevention specialist, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. Stepping On gives people confidence in mobility so they are able to go about their everyday activities safely while minimizing the risk of falling.

According to the CDC, 700,000 older adults are hospitalized each year due to a fall which most often results in a hip fracture or head injury. Further, falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries and more than 95 percent of hip fractures are caused by falling.
