SMC to Host Relay For Life

(PUEBLO, COLO.) In an effort to raise funds for lifesaving cancer research and care services, the Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center will host a fundraiser for the American Cancer Societys Relay For Life. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, April 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Gold Dust Saloon, 271 S. Union Ave.

St. Mary-Corwin has participated in Relay For Life for over a decade and this year the team is aiming to raise $5,000 to benefit the cause. Tickets for the fundraiser are $11 and include a hamburger and a side. In addition, two honorary cancer survivors will be introduced at the fundraiser, and the Dorcy Cancer Center team will be walking in their honor during the actual Relay For Life event on Friday, June 10 at Pueblo Community College.

The Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin is a proud participant of Relay For Life, and we hope to raise funds that will benefit lifesaving research and other crucial services provided by the American Cancer Society, said Brenda Galassini, Relay For Life team captain, oncology program manager, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. We invite the public to participate in this fundraiser and also to join us for the Relay For Life event this summer, as we walk to honor two cancer survivors, and raise proceeds to ensure that more individuals suffering from cancer become survivors.

In a partnership with the American Cancer Society, St. Mary-Corwin houses a resource center within the Dorcy Cancer Center that offers valuable materials such as turbans, wigs and scarves as well as information and programs for cancer patients and survivors.

According to the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life events can be found in 5,200 communities and 20 countries, and the Relay For Life movement raises more than $400 million each year. Donations are invested in groundbreaking research in every type of cancer and also help to provide free information and services to cancer patients and caregivers.
