SMC Offers Mindfulness Program(1)

March 2, 2017

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center is offering a spring session of the Mindful Me: Waking Up to My Life program to help individuals reduce stress while responding skillfully to illness, pain, and challenging life circumstances. These courses offer the opportunity for individuals to learn to actively engage in health and wellbeing through the practice of mindfulness, are open to the public, and the cost is $25. Participants meet on Mondays and can select either afternoon classes from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., or evening classes from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning March 27, and concluding May 15. A required orientation will be held Saturday, March 18 from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Mindfulness is a way of coming to know the mind and body more intimately, and to use ones inner resources for coping, growing and healing, said Rev. Jude LaFollette, program leader, chaplain, St. Mary-Corwin. Participants will gain deeper self-awareness in order to adapt to changes around them with greater ease.

LaFollette leads the Mindful Me classes which are modeled after the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, Mass. According to research conducted at the University of Massachusetts, the practice of mindfulness reduces stress, increases self-regulation of emotions including depression and anxiety, and strengthens immune system functions. Further, mindfulness may be responsible for changes in brain structure and function which positively affects mental focus and attention.

The program fee must be paid at the orientation which features detailed information and a practice mindfulness session. To learn more or to reserve a place for the orientation, contact Jude LaFollette at 719-557-5205, as space is limited.
