SMC Offers Peri-op Nurse Classes

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center is recruiting nursing professionals for its Peri-operative 101 Surgical Residency RN Training Program to support nurses interested in advancement in the highly specialized field of peri-operative nursing.This six-week course is for RNs seeking opportunities for professional expansion. Selected candidates will be hired into full-time positions in the peri-operative setting prior to the start of the program.

The program includes a rich learning environment under the guidance of experienced peri-operative educators as well as field time to observe and practice new skills with preceptors and mentors who are dedicated to preparing nurses for careers in the peri-operative setting. The program features diverse learning environments in the classroom and hands-on experience in clinical practice areas. It is accompanied by mentoring and online learning modules all geared toward preparing nurses for confidence and success. The program provides the foundation for peri-operative nursing and is followed by a comprehensive orientation in the peri-operative setting.

This course offers nurses the necessary tools to become proficient in the peri-operative nursing environment utilizing core competencies from the Association of Peri-operative Registered Nurses, said Jeanine Watson, RN, BSN, CNOR, director of peri-operative services, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. We provide selected candidates with the fundamental education, including theory, critical thinking and clinical skills required for this role and in turn the confidence to excel in the peri-operative nursing field.

As surgical care evolves, so does the role of the registered nurse who assists with patient care in the operating room. Perioperative nursing includes those activities performed by the professional registered nurse in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases of surgery. They work closely with the surgical patient, family members and other health-care professionals to help plan, implement and evaluate treatment.
