SMC Offers Strategies for Handling Chronic Pain

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center will offer a Partners for Pain Management support group beginning Tuesday, Jan. 10 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Dorcy Cancer Center Conference Room. This 14-week session is focused on aiding individuals in learning to understand, cope with, and control chronic pain.

Classes offer a variety of topics and methods that will aid participants in achieving a fuller and healthier life by reducing pain. Topics include acupuncture, massage therapy, nutrition, biofeedback, tai chi, and mindfulness. Further, the course delves into reasons why pain occurs, and provides accompanying information from subject matter experts including naturopathic physicians, nurse practitioners, massage therapists, certified tai chi instructors, and chaplains.

According to the U.S. Pain Foundation, 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain each day, and an estimated 20 percent of American adults report that pain or physical discomfort disrupts their sleep multiple nights each week. Studies have illustrated that effective chronic pain care requires access to a wide range of treatment options including biomedical and behavioral health. Behavioral interventions such as pain management classes demonstrate promise for providing pain relief either in conjunction with or in lieu of drug interventions.

Classes are open to the public on a first come, first served basis. For more information or to reserve a seat, please call Cheryl Wegelin at 719-557-3658. Seats are limited and participants should plan to complete the entire 14-week session.
