SMC Screens 1st Patient Using Tomo

(PUEBLO, COLO.) The Breast Center of Excellence at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center announced today that it has recently screened its first patient for breast cancer using state-of-the-art breast tomosynthesis scanning. This new technique leads the way in detecting breast cancer at its earliest, most curable stages and is now available for the first time in southeastern Colorado at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center.

Our first tomosynthesis screen was a success, and we are incredibly proud of our most recent advancement in providing these new technologies to patients across southeastern Colorado, said Johanna Shearer, director, imaging, cath lab services, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. This next generation technology builds on our breast care continuum and offers physicians and patients a comprehensive suite of solutions from screening and diagnosis through treatment and monitoring to provide the highest level of quality breast care to patients across the Pueblo and surrounding communities.

The technology marks a significant investment in the community and is another milestone in the ongoing development of St. Mary-Corwins Breast Center of Excellence. With a team of board-certified radiologists, breast surgeons, nurses, technologists and many others within a single location providing more than 17,000 screening and diagnostic mammograms annually, the center provides a truly coordinated approach that delivers the highest level of quality breast care to patients across the region.
