SMC Second Annual Stroll for Stroke
(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center is hosting its second annual Stroll for Stroke 5k Fun Run and Walk on Saturday, June 11 at Lake Minnequa beginning at 7:30 a.m. Adults, children and furry friends alike are invited to partake in this interactive family event sponsored by Southwest Motors.
Stroll for Stroke features multiple family-friendly activities centered on stroke awareness and prevention. The 5k and concurrent festivities fuse community members with local health experts for a day of fun, in hopes of inspiring individuals to lead healthier lifestyles.
The morning offers a variety of exciting activities including kid-friendly exercise classes like kids CrossFit and Zumba and a touch a truck session along with the interactive MegaBrain, the worlds only portable, inflatable, walk-through brain exhibit. The Stroll for Stroke festival also features snack vendors, a Hawaiian Ice stand, a farmstand with fresh produce, and numerous prizes and giveaways.
Festivities kick off in the parking lot on Lake Avenue across from the hospital campus, north of Fire Station No. 4 at 8:00 a.m., and the 5k fun run and walk registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a stroke survivor welcome. Participants can register early for a discounted fee of $25 for walkers and $35 for runners. Fees include a free t-shirt and children 12 and under can participate for free; the first 250 kids will receive a free backpack while supplies last.
Stroll for Stroke is an incredible opportunity for our community to come together to support such an important cause, as stroke is a leading cause of death in our nation, said Ashley Trujillo, coordinator, stroke program, St. Mary-Corwin. Through this 5k fun run and walk, were excited for individuals of all ages to learn more about how to prevent and recognize stroke and partake in healthy activities that help to inspire health.
According to the American Stroke Association, strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S., and kill nearly 130,000 individuals each year. Lifestyle choices including diet, smoking, high cholesterol and weight are leading risk factors but can be reduced greatly if modified or ceased.
