SMC Seeking Volunteers & Mentors for New Breast Cancer Support Program

November 8, 2016

(PUEBLO, COLO.) The Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center is pleased to announce a new support program designed to enhance the comprehensive care experience for cancer patients and survivors. Through a unique volunteer and mentorship opportunity, Survivors Offering Support or S.O.S. aims to provide a holistic and nurturing experience for those currently experiencing cancer treatment or who have recently completed cancer treatment.

Those who are interested in a mentorship role must be cancer survivors who are one to two years post-treatment, and must be willing to share their own personal journey with cancer. They are responsible for helping new cancer survivors learn to navigate life after cancer and sharing their personal stories of challenges, strength and perseverance while helping to enhance the overall patient experience. In addition, volunteers may be any qualified members from the community and will support Dorcy Cancer Center staff by escorting patients and families, performing a variety of clerical duties and assisting in planning special events.

This life-changing program will not only impact current cancer patients, but also allow cancer survivors to learn how to cope with life after cancer, said Brenda Galassini, program manager, oncology, Dorcy Cancer Center. We see these volunteer and mentorship opportunities as a chance for individuals to come together over the struggle that is cancer and to thrive with dignity, peace and grace.

Volunteers must complete an application and the volunteer onboarding process. Mentors must also submit an application, complete the volunteer onboarding process and participate in a four-hour mentor training session if selected for the program.

Deadline to sign up for the mentorship program is Monday, Nov. 14. Contact Brenda Galassini at 719-557-4548 for more information or to apply.
