SMC Vascular Services Reaches Significant Program Milestone

November 10, 2016

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center is pleased to announce that it has reached a significant program milestone with its participation in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), a national registry and outcomes reporting system designed to improve vascular health care. The hospital will now be able to benchmark its data with over 225 hospitals nationwide to assess quality of care and determine best practices in vascular health care.

The Vascular Quality Initiative is a major step forward for St. Mary-Corwin and demonstrates our commitment to optimizing health care value for our vascular patients, said Ken Madsen, MD, medical director, St. Mary-Corwin Vascular Services. Participating in this national registry allows us to measure the quality, cost and overall outcomes of vascular care with each patient encounter, tracking and comparing our results locally, regionally and nationally so we can set our vascular care program apart from others.

The VQI is a voluntary reporting program that tracks outcomes for 12 of the most common procedures performed by vascular specialists. The VQI registry collects and analyzes data from individual providers, hospitals and regional quality improvement groups including pre-operative risk factors, intra-procedural variables, post-procedural outcomes and one-year follow-up data. Participating physicians and institutions can compare their outcomes and benchmark against physicians throughout their region and nationally to improve the quality, safety, effectiveness and cost of vascular health care.

The Vascular Quality Initiative, a joint venture of M2S Inc. and the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), collects and analyzes data to improve the quality of vascular care. Currently, VQI has more than 390 facilities and 2,900 physicians participating, and over 320,000 vascular procedures reported. The SVS Patient Safety Organization (SVS PSO) provides oversight of the VQI through data sharing arrangements, key outcome and quality measure analyses, and dissemination of information to participating providers.
