St. Mary Corwin to Host Community and School Garden Safety Training

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center invites community members participating in an active community or school garden program to attend a free garden food safety training course on Friday, April 7, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at NeighborWorks of Pueblo, 1241 E. Routt Ave.

The training will help community gardeners including leaders and participants of school and faith-based gardens to develop basic food safety plans and practices to reduce the possibility of foodborne illness and other health concerns, including safe soil care, washing methods and storage and transportation procedures. It is ideal for groups that currently have an active community or school garden and individuals who are interested in beginning a gardening program for the upcoming growing season. It provides helpful information for garden land owners, leaders, and volunteers and is co-sponsored by the Pueblo City-County Health Department and Neigborworks LocalFood Pueblo.

We are pleased to offer the opportunity to expand the communitys knowledge and give them the tools for tracking success, said Rev. Linda Stetter, director, mission and spiritual care, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. Growing fresh produce is more important than ever, as our community continues to face struggles in having access to fresh and healthy produce, so we are happy to provide important resources to ensure that community gardens are attainable and are run safely and efficiently.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), community gardens not only yield healthy fresh fruits and vegetables, but help entire communities engage in physical activity, skill building and creating green space while enhancing social connections and boosting a sense of community unity.

Registration is required, to reserve a seat. Contact Rev. Linda Stetter at 719-557-5246 or or visit
