St. Mary-Corwin to Transform Healing Ministry

March 8, 2018

Revolutionary new model of health care delivery will maximize value for consumers and allow the organization to play a far more significant role in transforming health care in the region.

(PUEBLO, COLO.) The leadership team at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center announced today that it will take immediate action to implement a revolutionary new model of health care delivery that will maximize value for consumers and whole-person care through three distinct strategies designed to deliver uniquely transformative results. In a groundbreaking effort to stabilize the organization’s performance and create a path of sustainability, the hospital will focus on concentrating services exclusively on nationally-recognized specialty care, expanding its primary care platform and reimagining the hospital’s legacy campus.

“We are staying true to our Mission, Vision and Values in developing a new health care model that addresses the challenges and tough decisions that come with adapting to the rapidly evolving U.S. health care system and to this turbulent moment in our history,” said Mike Cafasso, chief executive officer, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. “We believe our potential to evolve to a vibrant new model will be game-changing and allow us to play a far more significant role in transforming health care in our region.”

The hospital will leverage its clinical strengths and expand its comprehensive, award-winning cancer care, orthopedics and diagnostic services, and will increase a number of surgical sub-specialties.

St. Mary-Corwin will modify the services and resources that do not directly reinforce the transition and make changes to its staffing model. Positions will be affected through attrition, restructuring, repositioning and job elimination. Senior leaders are currently working with human resources to support the individuals who are impacted. The St. Mary-Corwin Health Foundation will also provide associate financial assistance where possible, to eligible associates.

Simultaneously, St. Mary-Corwin will reimagine its primary care platform to maximize consumer value and whole-person care, harmonizing the mind, body and spirit. The organization will work with the community’s outstanding independent primary care partners to expand the capacity of community-based primary care sites through increased collaboration and expanded services. They will continue to serve all populations and strengthen coordination and care management for the community’s most vulnerable - the uninsured and low-income populations - through Southern Colorado Family Medicine’s Residency Program.

The organization will build upon its nationally recognized Breast Center of Excellence to enhance and expand its personalized, high-quality women’s services to address several health conditions that are biologically different and occur more frequently in women, such as breast cancer and osteoporosis. It will also transition its Pueblo West presence from a primary care location to an urgent care center to extend services and access to care.

Finally, transforming its health ministry and building better ways to move health forward presents a unique opportunity for St. Mary-Corwin to repurpose its historic legacy campus and breathe important new life into the surrounding residential streets of the historic Bessemer and Minnequa Heights area. The hospital is committed to an open, consultative discussion and to a creative, farsighted redevelopment effort with the potential to produce a very special complex of residential, institutional, public and private uses integrating with the assets and needs of the Southside community.

“Making the decision for radical transformation to ensure enduring success and influence in the years to come is painstakingly difficult, but we must preserve our legacy” added Cafasso. “The board and I are personally committed to our people and the community through this rapid and comprehensive transformation with radical transparency, integrity, compassion and respect.”

St. Mary-Corwin has already begun forming work teams, setting priorities and developing measurable outcomes to support the transformational work, estimating completion no later than December 2018. Leadership will establish a cadence for communication regarding the strategic plan process to ensure that stakeholders are informed through each phase and to maintain their commitment to patient safety and quality.
