Stroke 2017

St. Mary-Corwin Receives Distinction in Stroke Care by American Heart Association/American Stroke Association

(PUEBLO, COLO.) St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center announced that it has once again received the Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus Stroke award as well as the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite recognition from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. These awards recognize the hospitals commitment to providing the most appropriate and responsive stroke treatments according to nationally recognized research-based guidelines centered on the latest scientific evidence.

To achieve the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke recognition, hospitals must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and achieve 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke quality measures. These guidelines are aimed at improving patient care and outcomes in communities nationwide.

"St. Mary-Corwin is dedicated to providing the very best care for our stroke patients and this quality achievement award is the result of outstanding team effort and a strong commitment to excellence, said Brian Moore, president and CEO, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. Our stroke program is continuously improving and striving to deliver the most responsive care for stroke patients in hopes of yielding the best outcomes for each of them."

Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals across the country, helping hospital care teams ensure the care provided to patients is aligned with the latest research-based guidelines. Developed with the goal to save lives and improve recovery time, Get With The Guidelines has impacted more than three million patients since 2003.

St. Mary-Corwin's Stroke Center is dedicated to providing leading-edge care and education on stroke. The hospital has been nationally recognized with the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission for providing high-quality care for acute stroke and has been certified since 2006. In addition, the hospital provides a teleneurology service that delivers highly-responsive care to patients suspected of having a stroke. The program allows patients the opportunity to be seen by an on-call neurologist via mobile computer within a matter of minutes, thus expediting treatment and improving outcomes, ultimately aligning with such Get With The Guidelines measures.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, about 795,000 individuals suffer from a new or recurrent stroke each year; this means a stroke is taking place every 40 seconds on average. Strokes are responsible for 129,000 deaths per year and are the fifth leading cause of death in the nation. Further, a stroke patient loses 1.9 million neurons each minute a stroke is delayed, thus emphasizing the importance of prompt care.
