The St. Anthony Hospital General Surgery Residency is a five-year ACGME accredited general surgery residency program. Our program is committed to assuring excellence in surgical education through training and self-directed learning, patient care and advocacy, and leadership development.

Our physicians and clinical staff play a vital role in training our residents by providing opportunities to participate in journal club, surgical skills modules and weekly didactic sessions and trauma surgery M&M. In addition, residents experience rotations at St. Anthony Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Porter Adventist Hospital, St. Anthony North Health Campus and University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Residents rotating at St. Anthony Hospital will have access to eleven operating rooms, including Trauma Room 10 and a hybrid endovascular operating room. There are two da Vinci Xi® surgical systems, including a dual-console da Vinci Xi® that will enhance resident training in Minimally Invasive Surgery. We are in the process of installing all new laparoscopic equipment, monitors and surgical lighting systems.

    Residency program applications are accepted and reviewed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants are encouraged to submit completed applications early when ERAS opens as they are reviewed by mid-September.

    Strong preference will be given to applicants who are eligible to obtain full licensure in the state of Colorado at the end of the PGYI year in training. The Colorado Board of Medical Examiners requires one year of postgraduate US education for US and Canadian graduates and requires three years postgraduate US education for international graduates before licensure may be granted.     Interview Information:

    • Applications are reviewed by mid-October. Applications received after October 15 will only be reviewed if a second round of application review is necessary.

    Trauma Room 10 (T-10) at St. Anthony Hospital is Colorado’s first dedicated trauma-operating suite that enables seriously injured patients to go directly to surgery upon their arrival with EMS (including Flight For Life® Colorado). The T-10 suite is fully equipped and ready at all times to accept seriously injured trauma patients who may need emergency surgery – including dedicated radiology, EKG, lab, and other services.   • Program Goals

    The St. Anthony Hospital General Surgery residency program is committed to assuring excellence in osteopathic surgical education through training and self-directed learning, patient care and advocacy, and leadership development. We seek to foster continuing personal growth and professional relationships.

    The program will provide each resident with a sufficient scope, volume and variety of clinical experiences in general surgery:

    • Each participating Resident will document by program completion, participation, under appropriate supervision, a minimum of 850 major surgical procedures, as surgeon or first assistant.
    • During the chief year, at least 200 major surgical procedures of appropriate scope and variety with senior responsibility must be documented along with 25 teaching assistant cases.
    • During each year of the program, progression of surgical responsibility should be demonstrated including an adequate scope, volume, and variety of surgical experience. The program provides clinical learning and experience in the pre-operative, peri-operative and post-operative learning and surgical experience for patients with all diseases which fall within the scope of practice of general surgery.

    In addition, the program will provide educational requirements such as textbooks and literature representing minimal core knowledge of surgery, annually required scholarly activities for which the program will provide direction, support and education (study design techniques, research methods, literature, library access, etc.) and attendance to key committees and team meetings to further the Residents’ knowledge and understanding of the medical centers’ patient-centered activities, procedures and processes and the physicians’ role.

    Evaluations, being an essential key to any high-quality training program, will be used frequently and by many members of the residency program team to provide assessment, feedback and opportunities for improvement.

  • Curriculum

    Our program is accredited with the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our curriculum reflects the ACGME and the American Board of Surgery (ABS) requirements.

    As described by ACGME, we expect our graduating residents to be competent in six areas:

    It is necessary to master knowledge specific to diseases and operations when caring for the surgical patient. However, knowledge of systems and conditions that affect the body as a whole, such as sepsis or coagulopathy, must also be learned. Our program encourages the Resident to care for the whole patient not just the surgical issue.


    The Resident will be assigned to a service/specialty for one month. Duty hours will vary based on the preceptors’ schedule, surgery schedule and other factors. Residents will also be expected to attend conferences and committee meetings as mentioned in the Conferences section.

    Duty Hours

    Each resident in the program will document by program completion, participation, under appropriate supervision, a minimum of 850 major surgical procedures, as surgeon or first assistant. Of these 850 procedures, each resident should average 170 cases per year.

    Resident work hours are in compliance with the guidelines established by ACGME and will be limited to 80 hours per week averaged over a four-week period, inclusive of in-house night call and any allowed moonlighting. Residents will be provided one in seven days free from all educational and clinical responsibilities- averaged over a four-week period and shall have no call responsibility during the time. When vacation time is taken, it will be averaged over a three-week period. Residents shall not work in excess of 24 consecutive hours with an additional 4 hours allowed (PGY+) for transitions of patient care must occur for patient safety and resident education.

  • Conferences

    The Program provides regularly scheduled conferences and teaching opportunities at which each resident’s attendance is expected.

    A general description of conferences follows:

    • Weekly Didactic Sessions: Didactics cover the full spectrum of general surgery, including ortho-spine, neuro-vascular, cancer, brain tumor and surgery. Additionally, Residents are encouraged to attend (when possible) Ortho Trauma Conference, Tumor Board and the Lightning Data Conference (a quarterly conference which includes Colorado experts and reviews of lightening-strike cases and related data). Faculty and volunteer specialists provide weekly lectures year-round.
    • Trauma Morbidity and Mortality Conference: The goal of this conference is to review adverse events and learning points as well as review unique and interesting cases with Trauma Services. Cases are reviewed in a supportive environment identifying systems that could be improved, current treatment guidelines and potential learning opportunities.
    • General Surgery Peer Review
    • Trauma Clinic: Each resident is assigned, along with a faculty preceptor, to perform schedule procedures and/or follow-up exams on recently discharged trauma patients; one-on-one supervision with a member of the trauma team is provided.

    Approved stipend for Resident Year 2020-2021 starting July 1. Salary includes stipend of $3,000 per year per resident.

    Vacation and Sick Leave

    Fifteen (15) days per year (No Saturdays or Sundays and is not carried over into next year). Vacation days may not be taken on some rotations. No pay is given in lieu of unused vacation leave.

    Five (5) days of sick leave are permitted per year and do not carry over into the next year; pay is not given in lieu of unused sick leave time.

    Educational Leave

    Five (5) days paid educational leave can be used during the program for attending approved conferences for further education and/or to present research.


    Meals are provided through the physician lounge. Weekend and evening meals are provided through the hospital cafeteria.
