Summary
St. Anthony North Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship offers a one-year sports medicine fellowship to obtain advanced training in musculoskeletal medicine. Currently the fellowship accepts one candidate a year. This fellowship involves primary care of all patients with acute and chronic conditions or recreational activity-related injuries that adversely affect their ability to participate in physical activity and daily life. Accredited through ACGME, the fellowship offers a solid foundation in casting, musculoskeletal imaging (MSK ultrasound, X-ray and ultrasound), concussion management, and much more.
This rigorous one year program (running July 1-June 31) provides fellows with extensive clinical, academic, and on-field experience. Throughout the year, the fellow will practice in many different settings including training rooms, sideline coverage, orthopedic surgery outpatient offices, primary care sports medicine offices, Copper Mountain Ski Clinic, and several high schools events.
The fellow will work along CAQ Sports Medicine physicians in the CommonSpirit Health Sports Medicine service line as well as numerous orthopedic surgeons with our partners at Panorama Orthopedics and Spine Center. Rotations also include a robust primary care pediatrics sports medicine rotation at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children. Fellows will gain experience in the sports psychology program with the sports psychology masters students at University of Denver. Exercise physiology and research experience are obtained at Colorado State University Department of Heath and Exercise Science.

Fellows are required to have current ACLS/BCLS certification before rotations begin
Fellows in good standing may sit for the CAQ examination at the conclusion of the fellowship year
Fellows will care for athletes of all levels, from high school through professional teams and will be in various athletic training rooms throughout the year. Sports usually include football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, rugby, and boxing. The fellow will be responsible for home game coverage and possibly away games. The fellow will work closely with Metropolitan State University of Denver Sports Medicine to triage orthopedic injuries and provide primary care. They will also work with Colorado School of Mines and University of Denver.
CommonSpirit Health covers 86+ special events throughout the year. Fellows will be involved in planning and covering the Colfax Marathon. Fellows will also cover various NCAA and RMAC tournaments/ events throughout the year.
The fellow will have various opportunities to collaborate with research faculty from Colorado State University and Panorama Orthopedic and Spine Center to complete a research project by the end of the fellowship year.
During the fall high school football season, the fellow will be expected to attend Bumps and Bruises clinics on Saturday mornings at Panorama Orthopedics and Spine Center. This clinic will run approximately 10 weeks through the fall sports season.
All clinics are equipped with either SonoSite or GE ultrasounds for musculoskeletal imaging. Primary care sports medicine faculty all use ultrasound in clinics for diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic injection. A portable tablet ultrasound will also be used throughout the year to teach the fellow.

About Nicholas Gamble
Nicolas Gamble, MD, is on a mission to create a comfortable and caring environment for patients to reach their goals in injury prevention, care, and recovery. Dr. Gamble treats non-surgical injuries and disorders of muscles, joints, and bones and provides splinting and casting, fracture management, and joint injections. Dr. Gamble completed his undergraduate studies at Tulane University in New Orleans and attended medical school at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque. Outside of work, Dr. Gamble enjoys a variety of outdoor hobbies including fishing, hiking, skiing, and soccer.
