Behavioral Health Services
Adult Acute Care Hospitalization
Our acute care unit provides psychiatric hospitalization for adults with severe mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, major depression and anxiety disorders.
Hospitalization includes an active treatment program using behavioral therapy groups, occupational and recreational therapy groups, nursing groups and one-on-one counseling. Each individual has a social worker who coordinates care and a psychiatrist who regularly consults on medication and all aspects of care. The average length of stay for most people is five to six days, depending on medical needs. Acute care hospitalization is offered at Porter Adventist Hospital.
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
ECT can be a very effective treatment for people who are severely depressed, suicidal or have a bipolar disorder with depression or mania. At Porter Adventist Hospital, we believe in whole-person care that addresses each person’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. It’s this legacy of caring that provides the foundation of our comprehensive mental health services, including ECT for adults 19 years of age and older. It can be a lifesaving treatment for people who are:
- Unresponsive to other forms of treatment
- An immediate danger to themselves or others
- Not good candidates for antidepressants or mood stabilizer medication
The decision to pursue ECT as a treatment option is one that typically comes after much discussion and exploration of other therapies.
Geriatric Acute Care Hospitalization
Our geriatric psychiatric unit provides compassionate psychiatric hospitalization services to those who are 65 years of age and older. People can be treated for any number of acute or chronic psychiatric conditions, including severe depression/suicidality, anxiety, psychosis and bipolar disorder.
Knowing that many of our older patients will have chronic, and at times complex, medical problems, Porter Adventist Hospital medical staff will provide initial admitting history and physical admission and concurrent medical coverage, as needed, during the hospital stay.
Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
This partial day treatment program at Porter Adventist Hospital consists of specialized group therapy sessions led by clinical therapists. This is a skills-based program, emphasizing the use of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
The IOP primarily serves people with mood and anxiety disorders, such as major depression, bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. The program also helps participants with other disorders such as schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who are already stabilized on medication.
