WEST VALLEY CITY, UT (July 2, 2025) – Holy Cross Hospital – West Valley (HCW) dedicated a new hospital chapel this week, with the blessing and commissioning ceremony being performed by Bishop Oscar Solis of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City.
CommonSpirit Health, which acquired the hospital two years ago, requires each of its hospitals to house an on-site chapel. While Mass will be held in the newly completed chapel every Thursday, it is open to people of all faiths, as a place for prayer, meditation and solace.
“We are thrilled to have this new space in the hospital,” said Jeremy Bradshaw, CommonSpirit Utah Market President. “As Utah’s only faith-based hospital system, we strive to treat the whole person, and believe that individuals’ spirituality plays a key role in the healing process.”
During the commissioning ceremony and Mass, Bishop Solis offered a dedicatory prayer of the chapel as well as a blessing on the altar. Bishop Oscar Solis said people who visit the chapel will avail themselves of "God’s mercy and compassion for the healing that they are going to receive from the doctors, nurses and staff that is part of the Holy Cross ministry of care, of love and compassion.”
Father Tema, CommonSpirit’s mission director for the organization’s five Utah hospitals, oversaw the preparations for the chapel.
“Our mission is to make the healing presence of God known to the people we serve," he said. "This chapel provides another opportunity for us to meet the needs of our patients and their families with a sacred spot where they can come for spiritual strength especially during challenging times and stressful situations.”
The chapel is just off the hospital’s main lobby and will be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Mass will be held every Thursday at 12:05 p.m.
The chapel dedication was also a part of a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly remodeled main lobby of the hospital.
“CommonSpirit has invested more than $5.5 million in West Valley over the past two years. We wanted the community to come and see the improvements that have been made to their hospital,” said Christine McSweeney, president of Holy Cross Hospital - West Valley and Holy Cross Hospital - Jordan Valley.
West Valley Mayor Karen Lang addressed the audience as well, saying, “This chapel is now part of our community. In WVC, we are proud of our diversity of backgrounds, beliefs and traditions and what makes this chapel so special is it has opened the doors to everyone. It represents a shared belief in compassion, in healing and in strength we find when we pause, reflect and connect with something greater than ourselves.”
Lang said she lives just four minutes from HCW and that she has brought family members to the hospital on many occasions, including for broken ankles, broken arms, and even pneumonia.
“They have been part of my life in this community for 42 years,” she said.
