July 12, 2022

Index ranking is based on hospitals’ grades in equity, value, and outcomes

(PUEBLO, COLO.) July 1, 2022. Centura Health, the region’s health care leader, is excited to share that St. Mary-Corwin Hospital has been recognized as one of America’s most socially responsible hospitals by the Lown Institute. According to the press release, 66 U.S. hospitals earned the distinction of “most socially responsible” from the Institute.

The Lown Index ranking for Social Responsibility is based on hospitals’ grades in equity, value, and outcomes. The Index includes 53 metrics to provide a unique and holistic ranking of hospital performance.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as one of only three hospitals in Colorado that received this socially responsible ranking,” said Mike Cafasso, CEO, St. Mary-Corwin Hospital. “This ranking reflects St. Mary-Corwin’s dedication to Diversity and Inclusion which is a hospital-wide and system goal. Treating everyone who comes through our doors with compassion and respect is our daily promise. We are thankful for this recognition.”

In total, the rankings include 3,606 hospitals—with less than two percent earning top marks across all categories. Metrics such as racial inclusivity of patients, employee pay equity, and avoidance of unnecessary and potentially harmful procedures make the Lown Index a unique tool for evaluating hospitals as social institutions. The Lown Institute is a think tank known for its evidence-based assessments of America’s healthcare providers.
